Brescia, 8 April 2026 – The Global Steel Climate Council is a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing global standards for emissions reduction in the steel industry. It supports companies and stakeholders through science-based certifications, greater transparency in emissions reporting, and the promotion of low-carbon technologies. Its membership spans producers, associations, and organizations in over 80 countries including Duferco Travi e Profilati.
In August 2023, the GSCC adopted the Steel Climate Standard, a global benchmark for measuring and communicating emissions across the steel sector. The standard enables companies to obtain independent certification of their facilities’ emissions, track annual progress toward reduction targets, and contribute to the goals of the Paris Agreement, which aims to limit global warming to 1.5°C.
Against this backdrop, Duferco Travi e Profilati, one of Europe’s leading structural steel producers, has mapped out its decarbonization path using 2022 as its baseline year. That year, the company recorded an emissions intensity of 1.13 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent per tonne of hot-rolled steel. Building on this figure, it has set an interim target of 1.01 tonnes by 2030, with a long-term goal of 0.12 tonnes by 2050, in line with the GSCC Climate Standard. All data has been independently verified by Rina Services SpA.
“With the certification of Duferco Travi e Profilati, the Global Steel Climate Council’s certified membership in alignment with the Steel Climate Standard continues to grow. We continue to build momentum on top of the nearly 3 million tons of CO₂e already avoided through independently verified reductions, demonstrating what is possible when climate commitments are grounded in accountability and transparency. Producing steel from recycled ferrous scrap and operating its flagship San Zeno Naviglio facility on green energy, Duferco demonstrates what is possible when sustainability is built into the foundation of production. Congratulations to the team at Duferco on this major milestone on their decarbonization journey.”
Adina Renee Adler, Executive Director, GSCC
“We are proud to have obtained certification from the Global Steel Climate Council, which represents an important recognition of our concrete commitment to decarbonization. This achievement confirms the validity of our approach, based on the use of recycled raw materials, the efficiency of production processes, and the use of renewable energy. We have defined clear and measurable targets, aligned with the most rigorous international standards, because we believe that the transition to a low-emissions steel industry must be built on transparent and verifiable data. We will continue to invest in innovation and sustainable technologies to further reduce our environmental footprint and contribute to global efforts to combat climate change.”
