The RE-WHITE – Sustainable Transformation of White Slag from Secondary Metallurgy into Resources project, led by Duferco Profilati, was presented at the 41st AIM National Conference, held in Brescia from 9 to 11 September 2026.
During the conference, the scientific paper entitled:
“Valorization of Ladle Furnace Slag through Accelerated Carbonation for Use as a Sustainable Filler in Elastomeric Matrices”
was presented.
The contribution illustrated the experimental activities carried out within the RE-WHITE project on the accelerated carbonation of white slags generated by secondary metallurgy.
The investigated treatment process aims to stabilize the slag, mineralize CO₂, and produce carbonated materials that can be valorized as sustainable fillers within elastomeric compounds. The research therefore seeks to transform a by-product of the steelmaking process into a new resource, promoting solutions aligned with the principles of the circular economy.
The activity is part of the broader RE-WHITE research program, which focuses on two main treatment pathways:
- WSR Innovation, aimed at the controlled treatment of white slags and the production of RE-LIME, with potential reuse within the steelmaking cycle;
- Accelerated carbonation, aimed at slag stabilization, CO₂ mineralization, and the development of materials intended for potential external applications.
Project activities also include the chemical-physical, mechanical, and environmental characterization of the resulting materials in order to assess their potential use in the steel, cement and concrete, elastomer, and environmental sectors.
Participation in the 41st AIM National Conference represented an important opportunity to share research results with the technical and scientific community and to discuss the prospects for the industrial valorization of white slags, contributing to the debate on decarbonization and sustainability within the steel industry.
