Interface for data exchange, Saša, LMF Twin Furnace, L2 Scrap Yard, L2 Ladle Tracking


Thanks to a tracking activity and a full digital management of the process information, through algorithms developed to identify problems and manage of casting mix, it is possible to improve the steel mill continuous casting process.

Indeed, a specific interface for data exchange has been developed for the full identification and traceability of any semi-product, including new labeling machines for continuous casting products.


Born from the synergy between Travi e Profilati di Pallanzeno and Duferco Dev., Saša is a Digital Platform for data gathering and analysis and further simulation and optimization of the production, commercial and operation activities.

The main goals were to develop a digital platform that can gather, monitor and analyze high amount of data, sharing and integrating information with simulation and optimization systems. These algorithm-based intelligent systems can handle complex data flows to predict the evolution of the metallurgic processes and their effect on the finished products, helping operators monitoring in real time the process and intervene with corrective actions suggested.


Thanks to the collaboration between TPP and SMS Group teams, an innovative software solution was developed to control refining process and answer further production needs.

Among different advantages, the software allows:

  • To be fully integrated with the plant management infrastructure. Twin LMF operators have complete information and updated views about the production plan and the next casting to be refined.
  • Effective support for the selection of production mix: the new L2 Twin LMF helps operators to efficiently manage different requirements of casting mix.
  • Perfect metallurgic integration of refining, degassing and casting activities.
  • L2 Twin LMF gathers all process and production data and makes it available in the Saša Digital platform.


Among other digital solutions implemented by TPP and SMS Group, a specific software for the management of the Scrap Yard has also been developed. This has many advantages to satisfy management needs: traceability and automatic recognition of different steps of the bucket’s loading process; the consequent detailed report about weight and quality; automatic photo reporting; a Replay tool to trace back all steps; adjustment of production mix to the scrap availability and market conditions, advance reporting about logistic; automatic and accurate accounting of scrap yard levels.


The Ladle Tracking system features useful options for the continuous inspection of the ladle’s refractory material and the monitoring of consumption. Moreover, the sensors system can automatically identify ladles and detect the position of the cranes used for the scrap loading through radar technology.
