Made in Steel 2025: insights, ideas and meaningful dialogue

by | May 28, 2025 | News

The eleventh edition of Made in Steel took place from May 6th to 8th at fieramilano Rho.

Organised by siderweb, the biennial international event brought together key players from the Italian and global steel supply chain. It was once again a valuable occasion to reflect on the role of our industry in today’s uncertain global economy, to meet clients and partners, and to strengthen Duferco’s presence across the European steel sector.

Conferences, talks, and events

The program of conferences and talks was diverse and comprehensive. The opening session saw our President, Antonio Gozzi, speak in the main conference hall. Following interventions by MEPs Giorgio Gori and Massimiliano Salini from Strasbourg, President Gozzi underlined the importance of events like Made in Steel in encouraging dialogue between industry leaders, institutions and associations. He also stressed the need for bold and practical decisions by European policymakers:

“In recent years, Made in Steel has been much more than just a trade fair: it has been a place and a platform to exchange thoughts and ideas. It has fostered a new sense of awareness, one that today allows us to proudly affirm that the Italian steel industry stands as a European and global leader, distinguished in particular by its pioneering role in decarbonization. However, bold choices and concrete actions are needed from European institutions: fair rules that ensure a level playing field and allow continued innovation in the name of economic and social sustainability, not just environmental”.

Update on the market and raw materials

In an interview with siderweb, Sales Director Giuseppe Zolezzi hared an update on market trends, the macroeconomic situation, and Duferco’s investment strategy. He pointed to encouraging signs in domestic steel demand, boosted by public investments and the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). He also outlined the strong performance of the new San Zeno rolling mill, which will allow the Group to broaden its product range. Finally, Zolezzi highlighted the importance of taking a practical approach to sustainability and establishing a common definition for green steel.

Scrap also took centre stage in one of the key panels of the event. Giordano Simeoni, Purchasing Manager at Duferco Travi e Profilati, joined the session “Scrap: availability and prices, the challenges of the future.” The discussion with Romano Pezzotti (Fersovere), Ennio Busseni (EFB Trading), and Stefano Gennari (siderweb) focused on the key issues of price, availability, and outlooks of this essential raw material for the steel industry, especially considering the needs of the energy transition.

The Duferco booth: an opportunity to showcase the Group’s integration and its divisions

The final workshop of the research project “iSafety – Leveraging artificial intelligence techniques to improve occupational and process safety in the iron and steel industry” was held at the University of Brescia. The project is funded by the Italian Ministry of University and Research under the PNRR – Next Generation EU programme.

Developed by the University of Brescia in collaboration with ICAR-CNR, the project explored the application of mathematical models and artificial intelligence techniques to the analysis of safety data in the steel industry. The aim was to identify recurring patterns and support more effective prevention strategies.

Duferco Travi e Profilati took part as industrial partner. The company actively contributed to the project activities and provided the industrial case study on which the research was based.

The Industrial Contribution

Within Duferco, the analysis focused on the Electric Arc Furnace area, one of the most complex operational environments in the plant. Process data and information from monitoring systems were collected and analysed. This enabled a deeper assessment of operating dynamics and the identification of patterns relevant to the prevention of critical situations.

The integration of sector safety data with industrial data made it possible to validate the model in a real production environment. The results confirmed its ability to support risk analysis in a highly complex industrial setting.

Dialogue Between Research, Institutions and Industry

The final workshop provided an opportunity for discussion between academia, institutions and industry. Representatives from Confindustria Brescia, ATS Brescia and INAIL Brescia also took part, offering complementary perspectives on safety in the steel sector.

The collaboration between universities, research centres and industry highlights the value of a coordinated approach. It strengthens the protection of people through advanced data analysis and supports the transfer of scientific expertise into practical industrial applications.
